our story
Roots & Shoots Photography was started by Cheri Hudnut and Nikki Levine, two Berkeley-based professional photographers. They met in 2008 in a music class. Cheri had just received her son's school pictures and they got to talking about how much potential there was for modern, refreshing school portraits.
They knew they could be so much better, so they decided right then and there that they were the ones who could do it! No more fake smiles, bad backdrops, or wallet-sized prints. Ok, maybe the wallet-sized prints would stay, but from then on not only would school portraits be something parents would want to share (or even frame) but they would make sure Picture Day would be fun for the kids.
It is from this vision that Roots & Shoots Photography sprouted.
about Cheri
Cheri's passion for portraiture started in Los Angeles over 15 years ago. She loves to photograph children and their families and can occasionally be spotted acting in community theaters around town.
Cheri meticulously oversees the quality of every single image and manages the production of the photoshoots. She is the proud mama of two energetic boys, Leif and Ian.
about Nikki
Nikki has loved photography since she was a teenager. Making time stand still and helping people appreciate a moment in time is as compelling now as it was then.
Nikki oversees all of the internal operations for the business, and is the point person for all clients and vendors. Her son, Lukas, and twin girls, Sadie and Mia, keep her inspired.
our vision
We want to raise the bar in school "pictures" by taking high quality, professional portraits that capture each child's unique personality.
Since we care about our community, we work with schools in our neighborhood and provide them with many complimentary items to keep them running efficiently and to make school portraits accessible to everyone.
