our story
Roots & Shoots Photography was started by Cheri Hudnut and Nikki Levine, two Berkeley-based professional photographers. They met in 2008 in a music class. Cheri had just received her son's school pictures and they got to talking about how much potential there was for modern, refreshing school portraits. No more fake smiles, bad backdrops, or wallet-sized prints. Ok, maybe the wallet-sized prints would stay, but from then on not only would school portraits be something parents would want to share (or even frame) but they would make sure Picture Day would be fun for kids and efficient for administrators.
It is from these ideas that Roots & Shoots Photography sprouted.
In 2018, Nikki stepped away from Roots & Shoots to follow other passions in Portland, OR. Cheri continues to work with smart, funny, and amazing women photographers, editors, and people partners.

My passion for portraiture started in Los Angeles over 27 years ago. Making people laugh and feel comfortable in their own skin is my ultimate goal.
When it comes to image quality and production management, I am meticulous! Along with my husband and two sons, I have called the Bay Area home for 21 years. There’s no place I’d rather be!
